The neoclassical-style building, a listed monument since 1959, is one of the country's most important monuments.
The building is unique in that the central part of the tympanum facing the street façade bears the coat of arms of the Semsey family, and there is a huge vaulted basement under the castle.
Above the carriage gate, which stands on four stone pillars, is a large terrace surrounded by an ornate iron railing.
Since its renovation in 2012-2013, the building has also been home to the Andor Semsey Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the Semsey family, the history of Balmazújváros, the ethnography of the area and the lives of the town's famous natives - writer Péter Veres, politician, actor Imre Soós, writer Menyhért Lengyel, playwright and screenwriter.
The museum also hosts a temporary exhibition, and the events hall and gallery are used for various events.
Semsey Castle is located in the heart of Balmazújváros.
It can be reached from the main road No. 33, 20 km from Hortobágy, 23 km from Debrecen, 19 km from Hajdúszoboszló on the main road No. 4, 14 km from Hajdúböszörmény on the road No. 35, 220 km from Budapest on the M3 motorway.
