PICNIC – Gastronomy, music and culture in a unique historic setting

A special location, a fascinating history and unique experiences – all at the Nagyhegyes Crater Lake!

Hajdúszoboszló and its surrounding area are renowned not only for their medicinal waters, but also for their unique geological and industrial history. In the 1920s, under the leadership of geologist Ferenc Pávai Vajna, exploration of the Great Plain’s hydrocarbon reserves began. The 73 °C thermal water that gushed to the surface during this exploration laid the foundations for the Hajdúszoboszló Spa, which later became world-famous.

In January 1959, during exploratory drilling between Nagyhegyes and Hajdúszoboszló, the Hajdúszoboszló natural gas field, containing some 30 billion cubic metres of gas, was discovered. However, during the early stages of production, the technological limitations of the time and the high gas pressure posed serious challenges and, in some cases, caused severe gas blowouts.

One of the most significant events in the region’s industrial history took place on 23 August 1961, when a massive gas blowout occurred. The column of flame, nearly 100 metres high and caused by spontaneous combustion, burned for around 42 hours, and its light could even be seen from Debrecen, 20 kilometres away. As a result of the powerful eruption, the derrick sank, and the gas that gushed out for six days formed a crater nearly 150 metres in diameter, surrounded by an earthen embankment some 12 metres high.

Over the decades, the site of this former industrial site has developed into a unique natural environment and a popular destination for day trips. The lake that has formed in the crater, the surrounding wooded areas and the tranquillity of the Great Plain create a unique atmosphere.

This unusual venue is hosting the PIKNIK event, where nature, gastronomy and culture come together.

Throughout the programme, visitors can look forward to culinary experiences, atmospheric acoustic concerts and exhibitions. The event offers visitors the chance to discover the region’s unique historical heritage and natural treasures whilst enjoying a pleasant break.

Discover the unique atmosphere of the Nagyhegyes Crater Lake and enjoy a PICNIC surrounded by nature!
