The Zoo is set in a natural, almost undisturbed environment deep in the oak forest. The 30-hectare site welcomes visitors to travel around the world, observing how animals live in different parts of the world under unique conditions.
The park was established in 1998 with the aim of creating a zoo in Hungary that would follow the mission of modern Western European zoos, while preserving the natural environment.
The Nyíregyháza Zoo is home to more than 500 species and over 5,000 individuals of the diverse animal kingdom, including such specialities as the white tiger, the African elephant, the Komodo dragon, the Indian rhinoceros, the polar bear, the sand tiger shark and the western lowland gorilla. More than 50 conservation programmes have successfully bred giraffe, flour monkey, Bornean orangutan, Bali heron and Siberian tiger, among others.
