At the next screening of the NFI Film Club, on 7 October 2026 at 6.00 pm, those interested can watch György Szomjas’s 1976 colour Hungarian feature film, *The Wind Whistles Beneath Their Feet*.
The story is set in the 1830s. Having escaped from prison, the notorious Karcag outlaw Farkas Csapó Gyurka (Djoko Rosić) is plotting his revenge, whilst Constable Mérges Balázs (István Bujtor) is once again hot on his heels. Meanwhile, the fates of the outlaws and the local shepherds become intertwined, as the way of life on the Puszta is also threatened by the canal network under construction.
What makes the film unique is that it transposes the Western genre into a Hungarian setting; it is therefore regarded as one of the first and best-known „Easterns” in Hungarian film history. To create an authentic period setting, the director drew on ethnographic sources, whilst the distinctive, ballad-like atmosphere is brought to life by Ferenc Sebő’s score, based on folk songs.
